When Hana Sikorova, mayor of a village in northern Bohemia, rises to a coal mining concern, which offers villagers high compensation in exchange for abandoning their homes built on land containing brown coal deposits, her 14-year-old daughter Misha disappear. The search for her daughter makes Hana suspicious of the entire community, after years of peaceful coexistence. Under the pressure of events, the community begins to fall apart and show its true face. Solving the mystery divides the story into several interspersed narratives, which ultimately connect in unexpected ways.
